Bill Purden, TTHS basketball coach from 1957 through 1965, has generously donated a $500 per year scholarship (for 10 years) to a senior college-bound basketball player.
The criteria for the scholarship are good citizenship, 2.0 grade point average or better, on the basketball TTHS team, and winner to be chosen by teammates. The scholarship is named in honor of Coach Purden’s grandson, Bryan Purden.
Coach Purden, as a result of his coaching successes, has the third highest winning percentage of all head coaches in Thornton’s history. He also holds a special place in the history of Thornton athletics and in the memories and hearts of Thornton fans for that legendary 1961 basketball team that he coached to second place in the 1961 state high school tournament championship.
As well, Coach Purden was inducted into the TTHS Hall of Fame in 2010 (learn more).
